FC Twente verlaat Europa met opgeheven hoofd na kolkende avond
It is without doubt the most discussed European poster of a Dutch club this season. The battle between FC Twente and the Italian Fiorentina has already caused a lot of hassle off the field . After an exciting first leg in Italy, the Grolsch Veste is once again a true madhouse in the Netherlands. In the hell of Enschede, Twente unfortunately has to bow its head to the Italians on the field. But off the field…
Enough has already been written about the return. 2500 FC Twente supporters in Florence for a wonderful European away day. The only blemish is the armed attack by the Italian hooligans around the stadium. But with all that behind us, the focus can be on tonight’s game. The return between FC Twente and Fiorentina was already sold out with half an hour of free sales. The European adventure is less popular with the Italians. Only about 500 supporters have made the trip to Enschede to take place in the branch.

The supporters have already made an appeal on Twitter in advance, which can also be read throughout the stadium. Make it a madhouse today! Let the Italians feel how bad it can swirl in the Veste. At first glance, that call seems to have been heeded massively. It is very busy around the stadium early on and especially on Vak P they are ready to welcome the Italians with a stinging flute concert during the warm-up. Before kick-off it is a sea of flags on the short side. A nice action to focus the players even more.
Vanaf minuut één knalt het er vervolgens op in de Grolsch Veste. Het stadion barst bijna uit haar voegen zo hard en enthousiast als het er aan toe gaat. Zo luid als het er vanavond aan toegaat is simpelweg bij bijna geen enkele andere club in Nederland mogelijk. De Veste kolkt. Behalve de keiharde ondersteuningen is het ook mooi om te zien hoeveel de tegenstander wordt uitgefloten. Er wordt veel aan gedaan om de spelers van Fiorentina uit hun spel te halen. Zo lijkt het in Enschede vanavond soms meer op een Griekse of Turkse wedstrijd dan een Nederlands potje.
Voor het uitvak is er geen beginnen aan tegen dit vocale geweld. De eerste keer dat we wat horen vanuit het bezoekersvak is het gelijk negatief. De Italianen gooien een zware vuurwerkbom in het familievak dat zich onder hun bevindt. Een dwaze actie natuurlijk en vermoedelijk een soort wraak voor de gebeurtenissen van de afgelopen dagen. De wedstrijd ligt even stil en er lijkt sprake te zijn van enkele lichtgewonden. Het resultaat vanuit Enschede zijde is een werkelijk waar striemend fluitconcert voor de Italianen. De ruststand is overigens 0-0.
De maat vol
Ook in de tweede helft golft het geluid van de tribunes af. Beide ringen op de korte zijde bezitten allang geen zitplek meer. Elk spelmoment zorgt voor dolenthousiaste reacties op de tribune. Een matig schot van 20 meter afstand zorgt er alweer voor dat het twee keer zo hard gaat. In het uitvak gaat na een uur voetbal een fakkel af. Heel tof, totdat ook deze weer naar beneden wordt gegooid richting het familievak.
Nu is de maat vol bij FC Twente. Vanuit elk vak stormen er supporters de catacomben in om het halve stadion door te rennen richting het uitvak. Een vak wat eerst nog leeg was is binnen no-time gevuld met tientallen supporters die woest naar de plexiglaswand stormen. Onder in de hoek van het stadion is het geknipper van de zwaailichten al te zien. De ME neemt alvast haar plek in om het uitvak te beschermen na de wedstrijd.
Als de rust (enigzins) is wedergekeerd kan de wedstrijd worden uitgespeeld. Alhoewel er van voetballen weinig terecht komt. De Florentijnen voetballen de wedstrijd namelijk compleet dood. Door constant overtredingen te vragen, tijd te rekken en met andere randzaken bezig te zijn weten ze al het voetbal eruit te krijgen. De Italianen counteren bij vlagen goed weg in de ruimte die FC Twente wel moet geven, maar meerdere keren redt keeper Unnerstall de boel waardoor een verlenging binnen handbereik blijft.
Vingertoppen
For a moment it seems to actually happen. In the (only six minutes) stoppage time comes the ultimate chance, when a cross can be headed in freely by Joshua Brenet. For half a second, everyone in Enschede thinks of the ultimate release, but the fingertips of keeper Terracciano prevent a justifiable reward for the unbridled efforts of players and supporters.
This is how FC Twente’s European adventure comes to an end. While dozens of supporters make an attempt to reach the away section after the game – and succeed reasonably in this too – we return home. On the field, the Italians were (unnecessarily) a size too big for FC Twente, but off the field the supporters have shown themselves to Europe in an appropriate way. On to European football again next year in an exploding Grolsch Veste!
