Morgen staat in de veelbesproken Kuip de Klassieker tegen aartsrivaal Ajax op het programma. Inmiddels is het traditie dat de trainingen hieraan voorafgaand in zowel Amsterdam als Rotterdam massaal bezocht worden. Ook dit jaar leverde het weer mooie plaatjes op, ondanks dat Feyenoord de training opeens van Varkenoord naar De Kuip verplaatste om te proberen om tegen alle afspraken in zoveel mogelijk fakkels van supporters af te pakken. Dit soort lage streken van clubs zien we de laatste tijd helaas maar al te vaak, maar gelukkig waren ook in De Kuip de supporters uiteindelijk de winnaar.
Als morgen op het onzalige tijdstip van 12:30 uur wordt afgetrapt in Rotterdam zijn vakken G en GG in De Kuip vakken als alle anderen. Inmiddels zijn we er bijna aan gewend geraakt dat uitsupporters niet meer welkom zijn bij De Klassieker. Ook bij andere wedstrijden wordt steeds vaker en gemakkelijker een uitsupportersverbod opgelegd. Sommigen zijn zelfs gaan geloven dat het echt niet meer mogelijk is om beladen wedstrijden mét uitsupporters te spelen, zoals clubs en gemeenten ons graag willen doen geloven. Daarom misschien maar eens terug naar 17 april 2005, een editie van de Klassieker die vooral de meegereisde Ajax-supporters in het geheugen gegrift staat en de aanloop vormde naar het inmiddels al jaren gangbare uitsupportersverbod.
Feyenoord-Ajax, 17 april 2005
Door allerlei communicatiefouten tussen de politie en de NS staat er vlak voor De Kuip een wissel verkeerd die ervoor zorgt dat de eerste Ajax-trein stil komt te staan bij station Rotterdam Zuid, nauwelijks een kilometer verwijderd van De Kuip. De reis langs door de ME leeg gehouden Rotterdamse perrons was tot dan toe rustig verlopen, maar nu steeds meer Feyenoorders de ongebruikelijk lang stilstaande trein ontdekken ketsen toch opeens talloze stenen en flessen tegen en door de ramen van de trein. De Ajacieden kunnen geen kant op, en beginnen het treininterieur te slopen op zoek naar munitie om terug te kunnen gooien. Op Radio 1 is ondertussen te horen dat ‘in Rotterdam ernstige ongeregeldheden zijn uitgebroken toen Amsterdamse supporters het treinstel dat hen naar De Kuip vervoerde volledig vernielden’. De essentiële toevoeging dat dit dus pas gebeurt nadat de trein stil komt te staan ontbreekt in de verslaggeving.
De tweede trein is in afwachting van de eerste trein stil komen te staan in een weiland bij Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. Burgemeester Opstelten besluit de wedstrijd 15 minuten uit te stellen vanwege de problemen. Bij het stadion worden de Feyenoorders door de ME langzaam weggedreven van het spoor, en even later begint de Ajax-trein zowaar weer te rijden. 800 opgeladen Ajacieden vullen het perron en zetten koers naar het uitvak, maar worden in de bufferzone tussen het station en stadion tegengehouden door de ME.
De tweede trein die stilstaat in het weiland begint langzaam te rijden. Terug, naar Amsterdam. Burgemeester Opstelten heeft alle Ajax-supporters de toegang tot De Kuip geweigerd. Dit nieuws dringt ook langzaam door tot de 800 supporters die vlak buiten het uitvak in de brandende zon staan te wachten tot ze naar binnen mogen. Ze moeten hier blijven, terwijl de politie ondertussen een poging doet bussen of een nieuwe trein te regelen voor de terugreis. Zonder eten, drinken en wc maar mét radio’s wordt de wedstrijd gevolgd. De 1-0 is niet te missen, de 1-1 was zonder radio niet duidelijk geweest. Vlak na de 2-1, tien minuten voor tijd, komen er eindelijk vier stadsbussen naar het uitvak rijden. De ongelooflijk comeback van Ajax wordt gevierd op de Ring Rotterdam.
Blunders van Opstelten
Even after more than two hours, no transport could be arranged for about 300 Ajax players. After the match they are still standing at the branch, while the wrath of a furiously emptying Kuip awaits them. The ME has the greatest difficulty in keeping the crowd away from the party with partying Ajax players. Afterwards, Mayor Opstelten expresses his horror at the riots and says he wants to punish the perpetrators harshly. He announces an extensive investigation that should show who will have to bleed for this. Media coverage also leaves little room for nuance. The investigation is underway, and shows that the problems were mainly due to flaws in the poor organization, poor communication and premature decisions by the mayor. Van Opstelten was never heard from again about that particular Classic in 2005.
At the next Classic on February 5, 2006, Opstelten wants to prove himself and loses sight of the proportionality of the measures. When the atmosphere becomes somewhat grim afterwards, the police want to clear a viaduct to carry the Ajax supporters away. The supporters standing here are all being arrested, according to the police for disobeying them to leave. However, none of the supporters have heard an order to do so. The 800 supporters in total, including women, children and the elderly, wait for hours on the street or in buses, their hands clamped with plastic strips and without food, drink or toilet. Two years later, the Ombudsman wipes the floor with the police’s behavior, but the arrogant Opstelten refuses to apologize. He still believes that arresting 800 random supporters was the right thing to do, ‘because otherwise there would certainly have been riots’. However, he admits to ‘learn lessons’ from the criticism about the barbaric conditions in which the supporters were received.
Ever been away fans?
Meanwhile, tomorrow the fourth Feyenoord-Ajax will be played without an audience, while the blame for the disturbances in recent years lies largely with the authorities themselves. In Opstelten’s case it is completely ironic, because the failing driver is still on a crusade against football supporters. Meanwhile, Ajax and Feyenoord seem to be talking again about the possibility of admitting supporters to the mutual matches. The question is whether people want to seriously discuss this option. It is of course nice and easy, without away supporters. Hopefully the authorities can also take a critical look at their own actions, instead of always pointing directly at the supporters. Of course the supporters are to blame for the riots that have surrounded the Classics in the past, but often it also went well at matches where both groups of supporters were present. If there is another Classic with away supporters soon, the tension will be great, partly due to the years without supporters set by the authorities. Yet here lies a great responsibility for the supporter groups themselves to show that the Classic should and can be played with away supporters.
